Cabling and bracing is how an arborist gives a valuable but structurally compromised tree a safer future, instead of defaulting to removal. Steel hardware can be installed in the canopy of a tree to help protect it from large crown failures. Extra-High-Strength steel cable can be properly mounted high in the canopy with steel bolts to help support structurally compromised unions.
Installing cables can be a strong option when large leads are near structures, high-use areas, or other areas of concern. However, no amount of risk mitigation can completely remove the possibility of tree failure.
In some cases, brace rods may also be installed to help support a union that is splitting or at high risk of splitting. Bolts drilled through these compromised areas can help hold and support the union.
Can a splitting tree really be saved?
In many cases, yes. Cables and brace rods reduce the leverage and force on weak unions and support large limbs near structures. No risk-reduction method eliminates the possibility of failure entirely, which is why ongoing monitoring is part of responsible tree care.
